Nicholas J. Scobbo, Jr., a founding shareholder and president of the Firm, has nearly three decades of experience. Mr. Scobbo concentrates his practice on complex municipal, economic, financial, environmental and contract-related corporate and litigation matters, focusing in energy and other regulated industries such as insurance.
Mr. Scobbo serves as general counsel to the Massachusetts Municipal Wholesale Electric Company and to the Massachusetts Municipal Utility Self-Insurance Trust Fund. He has represented Massachusetts municipal light departments in numerous matters and has provided legal counsel to a broad range of public and private concerns.
Mr. Scobbo has tried over 100 utility rate cases in more than 25 different jurisdictions including the U.S. Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and has appeared in civil cases before the U.S. Supreme Court; the U.S. District Courts in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont; U.S. Circuit Courts of Appeal for the First and Second Circuits; as well as trial courts and regulatory agencies in the New England states and federal jurisdictions. He has appeared before the state Supreme Courts in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Rhode Island.
Mr. Scobbo was a sole practitioner in Boston prior to joining Ferriter Scobbo and its predecessor entity, Ferriter and Barna, P.C. He previously worked in the Utility and Insurance Section of the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. There, he oversaw all financial, accounting and other business-related activity in all cases brought before the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities and the Commissioner of Insurance.
His prior experience also includes a three-year stint as the senior financial analyst at the National Consumer Law Center, where he was responsible for all utility litigation.
He is a member of the American, Massachusetts and Boston Bar Associations, as well as the Association of Trial Lawyers of America and the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Energy Bar Association. He has been named a Super Lawyer by Law & Politics and Boston Magazine.
Mr. Scobbo received his J.D. from the New England School of Law. He received an MBA from Suffolk University and earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Boston College.
