This study aims to improve the scarce database of mechanical and durability tests on this type of concrete and give some insights to improve durability properties of concrete made with EAF slag, not only using modern agents and additives, but also working on the actual grading curve of aggregates used, closely connected to the overall durability for any kind of concrete. Two concrete production stages were carried out. Thus, steel slags were used not only for unbound layers like road bases and sub bases but also for bituminous bound layers like surface layers. All the mineral admixtures tend to decrease the long-term drying shrinkage of concrete. They are particularly useful in areas where good-quality aggregate is scarce. considerable interest in the liquid transport properties of cement-based materials. Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slags are by-products of the conversion of pig iron to steel. It is proved that they correlated well. Less ductile grades of steel are used to make knife blades with sharp edges. Based on the resulting high strengths, fine grinding of manganese-rich slag for use in concrete appears to be a good way of beneficiation. It is possible to recover the former two but the Fe–Cr–Ni in the latter one will not be easy to recover by mechanical separation. Industrial coke and graphite were also tested. Similarly, the split tensile strength of steel slag aggregate concrete was the highest, followed by that of dolomitic and quartzitic limestone aggregate concretes. Here we present new data giving further evidence of anomalies in the water transport properties of Portland cement-based solids, and show that the anomalous performance is much less evident when the Portland cement is partially replaced by ground granulated blast-furnace slag (ggbs). Results show that – BOF slags containing 40% of C2S – have attractive mechanical properties. The main uses of Slag are in construction, water treatment, agriculture, cementitious applications. Nevertheless, the distribution of lime between nodules and micro-inclusions may play a major role and could explain that similar amounts of lime can induce different instabilities. This slag powder requires more storage space and also has 39 less value in the market than the slag used as aggregate for road construction [4]. Roads constructed using LD slag demonstrate reduced rutting. Laboratory volume expansion testing is conducted to compare the results with the theoretical volume expansion. Properties of by-products and its replacement ratio are controlling the influence level and direction. Concrete containing composite mineral admixture with a high content of GGBS can achieve similar long-term strength, porosity, chloride penetrability, and carbonation and sulfate resistance to Portland cement concrete. SiO2 phase transformation from α'-C2S to γ-C2S. Further facts and figures on LD slag: http://bit.ly/ld-slag. The slag principles and requirements for foaming in the electric arc furnace are discussed. Similarly, some of the physical properties of steel slag aggregate concrete were better than those of crushed limestone aggregate concrete, though the unit weight of the former was more than that of the latter. 5 by adding quartz sand, disintegrating of slag was prevented. Results showed that lime is present under two forms in slag grains: some nodules observed in the matrix whose size ranges from 20 to 100 μm and some micro-inclusions, enclosed in the heterogeneous calcium silicate phase whose size ranges from 1 to 3 μm. This method can be easily industrialized. In addition, the electrical and material efficiency of the electric arc furnace (EAF) can considerably be improved by a good slag practice. 2 38 stainless steel slag powder. When the mix proportions are adequate, both the mechanical strength and the durability of slag concrete are satisfactory, although in less care mixes durability is likely to be impaired. Finally, leaching tests were performed to determine the environmental impact of the concrete, which, in comparison to results obtained directly from the slag, confirmed an important cloistering effect of the cementitious matrix on contaminant elements. This research study was conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties and durability characteristics of steel slag aggregate concrete in comparison with the crushed limestone stone aggregate concrete. As LD slag is harder and more compact than natural rock, roads last longer. Due to its positive technical characteristics, LD slag is used all over the world in road and railway construction and for engineering. As a result of the application of the proposed modeling, acceptable levels of compatibility were achieved compared to the empirical BOF data and targeted steel composition. Eventually the criterion (relationship) is established based on the free lime content, the specific gravity and bulk relative gravity of a specific steel slag sample. These phenomena comprise chemical reactions in liquid metal, slag, and gas phases and at their interfaces, heat effects, and fluid flow and mass transfer phenomena in different reaction zones as well as in the entire system. Weaker aggregates tend to produce a more ductile concrete than stronger aggregates do. Higher steel output at lower cost is one of the main objectives of modern steel making methods. With high particle density and hardness, this slag has superior wear resistance and for this reason is used as an aggregate for asphalt concrete. Pellets of slag with compositions in the CaO–SiO2–MgO–Al2O3 system were melted in the coke funnels and heated to 1 500°C under argon, then held at temperature for a certain time. The focus is always on stories about voestalpine employees, projects and products. Fundamentals of stainless converting will be shortly discussed too. Four types of steel slags, a ladle slag, a BOF (basic oxygen furnace) slag and two different EAF (electric arc furnace) slags, were characterized and modified by semi-rapid cooling in crucibles and rapid cooling by water granulation. Compressive and tensile strength, elastic modulus and durability characteristics (accelerated aging, freezing and thawing, wetting and drying) of concrete containing EAF slag as aggregate according to Fuller’s ideal grading curve were experimentally investigated. BOF slags are by-products of steel conversion. In order to confirm the practical experiences test roads have been built more than 25 years ago in agreement with steel producers and the road building administration. The flow mechanism was discussed in terms of a simple gravity and capillary/interfacial force analysis of the system. 40 At present, both slags are generally treated as waste and dumped in landfills. Although there were negligible deviations from the target values, most of the fuzzy results obtained using MATLAB-Fuzzy Logic Toolbox version 5.0 were found to be acceptable. When ground to a Blaine surface area of 600 m2/kg, the slags were introduced into the composition of different concretes instead of fly ash or silica fume. LD slag has been successfully used in Austria since the 1970s. According to X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and other studies, the main phases identified in EAF and AOD include Fe–Cr–Ni alloys, Fe–Cr oxides, Ca–Mg–Al silicates and Ca–Mg oxides (free CaO and periclase) with many mineral species. Also, ternary blend mix showed higher resistance than binary blend specimens. They mainly contain C2S, C2F, Fe1−xO, CaO, Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3. This by-product that mainly consists of calcium carbonate is broken down to smaller sizes to be used as aggregates in asphalt and concrete. order to apply for theses mortars. All specimens were immersed into 3% concentrated solution for 60 days and solutions were replaced regularly in consider with loss of sulfuric acid concentration. This paper describes the work carried out in laboratory to produce concrete with good properties using oxidizing electric arc furnace (EAF) slag as fine and coarse aggregate. The metals obtained are rich in Fe, Mn, V and Cr depending on the treated slag and residues. Mortars and concretes using these slags were cast. It was concluded that the non-ground-granulated blast-furnace slag can be used as fine aggregate under some conditions. From SEM, Fe, Cr and Ni exist in the liberated alloy particles, association particles and complex particles. The results indicated that the durability characteristics of steel slag cement concretes were better than those of crushed limestone aggregate concrete. Stainless Steel - Properties and Applications of Ferritic Grade Stainless Steel Fabrication Grades 310/310S are forged in the temperature range 975 - 1175°C. The lowest split tensile strength was noted in the calcareous limestone aggregate concrete. Patents Introduction Steel slag is a mixture of metal oxides and silicon dioxide and may contain metal sulphide along with metal in the ele-mental form. The interactions between ordinary Portland cement or calcium oxide and each slag were investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and thermoanalysis. Keywords: stainless steel slag, bitumen, asphalt, smart, pavement, mechanomutable (Some figures may appear in colour only in the online journal) 1. The type of coarse aggregate also influences the modulus of elasticity of concrete. About this page. sand in both groups. Steel slags are generally rich in Ca and Mg which make them suitable for mineral carbonation. Both gave satisfactory burnability indexes (BI) and high percentages of replacement of limestone (up to 38%) and clay (up to 72%).EAF slag was introduced in the kiln feed at a lesser degree (20%), but promoted a better raw mix burnability: furthermore, being a non-carbonated source of lime, it allows a reduction of both thermal requirement and emission of CO2, gas responsible for the greenhouse effect. The manufacturing process of waste-based clinkers was environmentally compatible and the related cements were similar in performance to common hydraulic binders. A lime extinction procedure was proposed as alternative to standard PR NF EN 13282-2. Some steps taken by Tata Steel, India are: 89.6% of solid waste generated from Steel Works is recycled or reused. The slag products include a metallurgical powder for desulfurization of steel, hydraulic binder and slag stones for construction applications. A good slag practice is essential for production of a high-quality stainless steel. While slags are generally used to remove waste in metal smelting, they can also serve other purposes, such as assisting in the temperature control of the smelting, and minimizing any re … Data set was selected as inputs from the real empirical BOF data in an integrated steel plant based in Turkey. From: Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in Cementitious Construction Materials, 2018. Meanwhile, the ready-mixed concrete with the BFS and the fly ash have become popular in Osaka area. and 0 to 7 mm (0 to 0.276 in.) The stainless steel slag may comprise silicates and/or oxides of calcium, silicon, magnesium, iron, aluminum, maganese, titanium, sulfur, chromium and/or nickel. Electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, a by-product of steelmaking recovered after the oxidizing process, is useful when employed as aggregate in hydraulic concrete and bituminous mixtures. The corrosion of the metals occurs mainly due to their reaction with the pore fluid but the effect of the cement itself as a source of additional ions must not be underestimated. The efficiency of the slag also appears to be more dependent on its iron content than on its concentration or particle size. The results indicate the potential use of this waste material for cement mortars. Also Electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) and blast furnace slag (BSF) were used as substitution for coarse raw aggregates in 25%, 50% and 100% of concrete production. When he’s not in front of the camera, he’s responsible for sales at voestalpine BÖHLER Aerospace as Vice President Sales. To minimize the oxidation of chromium, the oxidation potential must be controlled and decreased along the lowering carbon content. For smaller diameters, slag did not flow through the channel. These by-products were used as non-ground form in the concrete. Concrete made with EAF oxidizing slag as an aggregate shows good physical and mechanical properties and further study of its durability will ensure greater reliability in its usage. The use of a combination of these by-products concrete, significant carbon dioxide emissions reduction effect can be expected. Steel slag is a mineral byproduct generated during steel production. The solubility of chromium, molybdenum and vanadium varied in the different modifications, probably due to their presence in different minerals and their different distributions. The use of LD converter steel slags (coming from Linz–Donawitz steelmaking process) as aggregates in road construction can in certain cases lead to dimensional damage due to a macroscopic swelling that is the consequence of chemical reactions. Slag is completely stabilized when the expansion capacity of the slag mortar bar does not exceed 0.052% after three hours of autoclave at 215.7 °C. The compressive strengths of hydrated pastes are given at 7, 28, 90 and 190 days. Steel slags have been produced and used successfully in different European countries as a road construction material because of their advantageous technical properties. Also, thanks to its luster, it even finds use in ornaments and sculptures too. Capillarity, drying-wetting and freezing-thawing resistance of the concrete can be accepted to some extent. GGBS tends to improve the long-term properties of concrete. To do this, the slag obtained in the steelmaking process must be crushed and stabilized. After demolding, specimens were water cured for 28 days.
