With more than 25 years of legal experience, Robert M. Granger focuses his practice on energy, insurance, contract and regulatory matters.
Mr. Granger has negotiated complex corporate transactions on behalf of clients and litigated and settled countless business disputes. He has considerable experience representing clients in arbitration and administrative proceedings, as well as before trial and appellate courts.
His vast expertise in energy-related matters includes: electricity purchase and sale agreements for nuclear, fossil, hydroelectric, wind, cogeneration, landfill gas, and trash projects; master agreements for physical and financial settlement; power plant ownership and operation agreements; site leases and construction contracts for wind turbines; municipal light plants, electric cooperatives and aggregators; natural gas supply and transportation contracts, as well as natural gas pipeline construction and operation contracts; power pooling agreements; billing disputes; abatements and payments in lieu of taxes; eminent domain takings; zoning issues; and utility bankruptcies, among many other complex issues.
He has appeared in state and federal regulatory proceedings for a wide variety of energy-related matters, such as electric rates and cost allocations, restructurings, mergers and acquisitions, transmission ties, service territory disputes, nuclear licensing and decommissioning, and natural gas pipeline siting.
His experience in the insurance area includes: organization and licensing of insurance agencies; asset purchase and sale agreements; joint venture, agency participation and cluster agreements; master and sub brokerage agreements; joint marketing; general corporate matters; buy-out and shareholder agreements; employment and severance agreements; employee manuals; and non-competition and non-disclosure agreements. He has appeared in state and federal court on such matters as coverage issues; transactional disputes; return premium liability; and covenants not to compete.
Mr. Granger draws on an engineering and technical background. He pioneered the computer models used by the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities to reform electricity pricing in the 1980s. Mr. Granger was previously a rate and financial consultant with Chas. T. Main Engineers and managed projects for power clients in the United States, Canada and Central America.
Mr. Granger graduated cum laude from Suffolk University Law School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
